A digital nomad will forever live with loneliness
You need to have a mix of enjoying the solitude and enjoying being with others
I wasn't planning to write the third post of the series "7 traits that make life easier for a digital nomad" yet. But so many people messaged me about dealing with the loneliness that I felt compelled to write.
A digital nomad spends a lot of time alone. Wake up alone, drink coffee, start work alone, go to the gym, and rest at night alone. You really need to enjoy being alone.
But loneliness always comes. The solution is simple if you're in a city where friends are around. Just go out at night with them frequently.
It gets more complicated when you go somewhere you don't know anyone. Here comes a characteristic that is fundamental to being a digital nomad. You need to be minimally communicative.
You don't have to be the person who talks to everyone. But it will help a lot if you can meet new people wherever you are. The circumstances are numerous: it is possible to make friends in a cafe, bar, or party.
A tip is to attend free walking tours and pub crawls. Both places will always have people willing to talk. Dating and friendship apps are other possibilities.
Another solution to combat loneliness in everyday life is swapping your work at home for cafes or libraries.
Before being a nomad, I did many things alone, like going to the cinema, cafes, restaurants, bars, and festivals. Not to mention traveling. Many people don't dare to do this because they think they will be seen as the "loner without friends". Can I be honest? You are not the center of the universe. If anyone thinks that, bad luck to them.
As I am also communicative (in my last job, a colleague asked me to laugh more quietly), I have a perfect mix of enjoying solitude and enjoying being with others.
There are still other possible ways. You can always choose to live in cities where you know people who can go out for a beer.
Is it possible to be a nomad being an introvert? I believe so, but you really need to deal with it well.
Do you want to be a digital nomad, but are these issues worrying you? Start by doing some tests, like going to the cinema alone.
And, of course, you can talk with me. I'll have plenty of tips and advice to share.
