The Covid pandemic opened my eyes to remote work. During the worst days of isolation, I was able to work from my house, from a friend's house in Rio de Janeiro, from Airbnbs in Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre, from my parents' house in the interior of São Paulo, and many other places such as cafes, restaurants and bakeries.
The face-to-face return in 2022 showed that this way of working was no longer for me. What is the point of commuting daily to work in a dangerous region of São Paulo to carry out the same tasks I did from a distance in 2020 and 2021?
I led a team of more than ten people, and the distance affected its performance at no time. I was always present to try to improve processes and correct any flaws by messaging apps, calls, or Meet.
Face-to-face communication, by the way, is curious. Although we are all in the same physical place, my colleagues and I interacted primarily via email and messaging apps, including between people close to each other. So why not work remotely?
It is undeniable that there are differences. Virtual contact will always be slower than the physical one. Personal interaction brings us closer to our colleagues. But it doesn't have to be done all the time. I am not a work from home radical, but an advocate of hybrid models and a severe critic of 100% face-to-face work.
After a few months of returning, I couldn't stand it. I left my job, left my apartment, and went to fulfill my dream of being a digital nomad. In this newsletter, I will tell you the steps of my new life, share every learning I have had since then, discuss work models, talk to people like me and give tips to you who also want to become one.
Welcome to the world.
Congrats my friend. Hope you achieve your goals.
